Yes, it’s Leap Day today, so there are five movie release dates this month. But there are only two wide-release films today.
Wide-Release Film Openings
My money’s on The Other Boleyn Girl (Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman, Eric Bana) to be in next year’s Oscar nominees list.
Though whether Boleyn Girl will beat Will Ferrell’s outrageous Semi-Pro (Andre 3000, Woody Harrelson, Will Arnett, Maura Tierney, Rob Corddry) in the box office this weekend is hard to say.
Limited-Release Film Openings
There are several limited-release films opening today:
Chicago 10, about the trial of anti-war protesters (including Abby Hoffman) after the 1968 Democratic National Convention. (Note: I’ve heard this was delayed, but IMDB says it’s opening.)
Penelope (Christina Ricci, James McAvoy, Reese Witherspoon). Ricci plays a princess with a pig’s nose, which is a curse to be broken when she finds true love.
City of Men (Douglas Silva, Darlan Cunha, Jonathan Haagensen), about a drug war and family secrets that push friends into danger.
Bonneville (Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Joan Allen) is a “road movie about a widow” trying to find peace.
